Bilene Lagoon or Lagoa Uembje is a beautiful part of the Lagoon Coast about 190 kms from of Maputo. The turn off is at the town of Marcia, about 160 km north of Maputo and Bilene is a further 30 kms from Marcia.
This lagoon is 20 km long and 5 km wide. The Mozambique current, which because of the proximity of Madagascar forces the current to pass close in shore to Bilene, carries a large amount of sand which it deposits in the lagoon mouth.
This causes the mouth to be blocked for relatively long periods at a time. In April which is the end of the rainy season, the mouth has normally been scoured out by the large quantity of water filling the lagoon and overflowing the sandbar, the lagoon is then reopened to the sea.
